ReplyDeleteQuestions:
1. How will I implement the practices on an ongoing basis?
2. How will I evaluate the effectiveness of these activities?
After reading the summaries from each chapter, I found some of the practices to be readily implementable. Primarily, chapters 1-3 present ideas that I plan to incorporate for small group instruction.
Chapter 1- I agree that the purpose of small group instruction should be meeting the needs of students in a way that accelerates their learning. More often than not, I am reinforcing in small group instruction, what was taught during whole group instruction. Consequently, each student may not be included in small group instruction on a on a weekly basis.
Chapters 1 and 2 discuss the need for small group organization and planning. Both chapters stress the necessity of having a lesson plan, so as to focus your instruction and make the best use of the time.
Question 1-
On an ongoing basis, I plan to develop focused lessons, based on the individual & group assessments. Many of the students have deficiencies in some of the same skills. I'll add these common skills in the small group lesson schedule rotation, which will facilitate the inclusion of all students on a weekly basis.
Adhering to the schedule will be the method of evaluating the inclusion of all students. Regular monotoring and sssessing will be the method of evaluating the effectiveness of the small group instruction.
Another aspect of organizing for small group effectiveness, cited in Chapter 2, is that of minimizing student interruptions. This is taking more time to fully realize, because initialization of the small group instruction is dependent on the other students' ability to work independently. Some of the students have a tendency to interrupt, despite the routines. Going forward, I'll continue to reinforce the routines, use a red flag as the physical indicator to minimize interruptions, and assign a student from each of the other groups to assist students needing materials.
The effectiveness of these practices will be evaluated by the reduction in the frequency and/or substances of interruptions.
